Dear Mark
When MPs heard about Damian Green's arrest, many of us asked ourselves the same question: "When did it become a crime to hold the Government to account?"
Throwing a spotlight on information the Government would rather keep hidden is an essential part of our democracy. And when dealing with an administration legendary for its secrecy, you increasingly have to rely on whistle-blowers to see the full picture.
I have written at greater length on this issue in today's Telegraph, as you can read at Damian Green
This unprecedented arrest is a wake-up call. We must save our broken democracy.
Best wishes,
Nick Clegg

Welcome To November Fools Day
The chancellor plans to give every struggling business the awesome task of tinkering with the VAT rate, lets call today November Fools Day
Certainly none of the small retailers will benefit, and the admin costs may put many out of business.
This really will not stimulate spending, when the sales are already offering 20% off already - and still not selling.
Much better value would have been to Increase VAT to 20% AND Raise the Personal allowances before paying basic rate tax by a similar amount, as this would at least put some cash into all the lowest paid peoples pockets. For years successive governments have promised NOT TO TINKER with VAT
- simply because changes cost everyone so much.
Without changing the Earnings Allowances for those of us on VERY LOW INCOMES and QUALIFYING FOR HOUSING/COUNCIL TAX BENEFITS nothing he has planned will make any difference at all, as we hand over 92.5% of everything we earn back to the government in our Council Tax - for which we get Crooked Cops, Poor Roads, and only some of our children get good Schools.

These speeches were being made right up until September - 2007 - just days before Northern Rock started to collapse.
By contrast Liberal Democrat Vince Cable, in 2005 & earlier, was saying that the UK economic growth has not been driven by investment & overcoming longstanding weaknesses in productivity & skills but by a binge of debt finance which is not sustainable.
How right he was & who would you rather trust to run the economy?

On 23rd October the price of crude oil fell to its' lowest value for 16months.
At that time (June 2007) diesel was 96.9p per litre. So why isn't it now?
When crude was going up petrol & diesel retailers had no difficulty in raising
prices on a daily basis.
We were also relentlessly told that gas prices followed oil prices. So why
haven't they come down?
